The Boys in Company "C"
Saturday Morning: Greene County, TN
The boys from Company “C” of the local Army Reserve loaded on to three buses for a six hour trip to Camp Shelby, Miss. To begin an 18 month stint on active duty that will eventually have them serving in Northern Iraq.
I knew that they were leaving but in the hustle and bustle of daily life it had slipped my mind. I was driving down the 11E bypass and noticed that there were vehicles pulled over to the side. Then I saw the groups of people some with signs some with flags and some just standing there waiting. It finally dawned on me that our reserve unit was leaving for Active Duty and the folks were out to tell them goodbye and God Bless.
I found a spot and pulled off to wait. Soon we heard the sounds of sirens and saw the flashing red and blue lights of the fire trucks and police escort. We all moved closer to the side of the road as they approached. As the three busses came by I stood at attention and saluted, I could see some of the soldiers inside the bus returning my salute. My eyes filled with tears, much as they are as I type this.
As the convoy passed we loaded up in the Bronco and fell into line behind the procession. My emotions could not be contained as we followed the troops down the four-lane passing hundreds and hundreds of people with flags and signs of well wishing. Young kids, Boy Scout Troops, a little old lady, she had to be in her eighties, standing beside her car waving a small American Flag. Veterans, some in wheel chairs some on crutches, waved and saluted. People of all ages and descriptions, it was beautiful.
We followed the buses all the way from Greeneville to the Interstate, some 17 miles, all of it lined with folks, just good old American country folks, come together to send their friends, neighbors, kin or someone the never met and never will, off to war.
I now pray nightly for these soldiers, their families and for their safe return. I pray too that President Bush will be reelected because I know that he will provide these boys with the leadership they need to complete their mission.
Should John Kerry be elected, I fear that their lives will be in even greater danger. I know this from first hand experience. I was serving in Viet Nam while he was telling Congress and the American people that I and my brothers-in-arms were rapists, baby killers and worse.
John Kerry is truly “Unfit For Command”
God Bless our Troops and May God continue to Bless America.
